It’s amusing to imagine that, in modern times, One Piece has become synonymous with the video game developer Omega Force thanks to their small but impactful series of Warriors-style games of which introduced the West to One Piece video game adaptations. Three strikingly similar games later, and a few offshoots similar enough to the original, it is now an odd sight to behold when a video game based on the Shonen Jump legend One Piece is more than just a one-vs-thousands Dynasty Warriors clone. We know, we know, you’re all pretty freaking jazzed about the upcoming One Piece fighting game Burning Blood. How do we know? Well, hell…because we’re damn excited to! Often when a One Piece game is developed, it’s usually handled by Omega Force who love to make Warriors-style titles that pit one against many. That’s why we have three One Piece: Pirate Warriors currently available for purchase across almost all home consoles. Japan are fine, they seem to get handheld One Piece fighting game titles, so to them Burning Blood is just another one to add to the long list, but for us here in the West, well…this is on par with being a miracle. Burning Blood, unlike other mainstream One Piece video game titles, does not have players facing off against countless enemies, attacking horde after horde until one area is liberated, then moving onto another. Bandai Namco Entertainment announced, through this week’s issue of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump, that Luffy’s Gear Fourth form can be used as a playable character in their upcoming fighting title One Piece: Burning Blood. Revealed as the protagonist’s latest and greatest form at the very end of the Dressrosa Arc, this evolved combat style mixes the brute force of Luffy’s Busoshoku Haki (Armament Haki) with his incredible speed in a way that makes him almost unbeatable…except for the fact that his stamina is easily drained while in this mode, forcing him to return to normal after a short amount of time. Burning Blood is really busting down barriers with the way that it is being presented to audiences. It is a game that focuses on the fighting variants of Devil Fruit users in realistic (in accordance to the series) ways, but not only that; it is also introducing characters to the world of One Piece video games that have, before this, never been seen. Yeah, I bet you didn’t expect these two One Piece characters to be featured on the roster of the upcoming fighting title One Piece: Burning Blood. So far, the most we’ve heard about this game is that it will feature realistic battles between Devil Fruit and Haki users, with those of the Logia type being able to make themselves invulnerable and those knowing how to use Haki being able to activate and shut said Logia users down, but never once was it mentioned that there would be gargantuan characters like X Drake and General Franky thrown into the mix. The latest issue of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump has just been released over in Japan, and between the pages of this much-loved weekly magazine lies this incredible news regarding the upcoming multi-platform fighter and it’s extended roster. The screenshots featured in the full-page spot shows X Drake in his Tyrannosaurus Rex form going head-to-head with the General Franky confirming that this game will at least have one large-scale battle between two damn big characters. Do me a favour, I need help proving something; go ahead and ask any One Piece fan who their favorite character is. Chances are, they’re all going to be drastically different, of course, but I have a sneaking suspicious they’ll all mention Smoker at least once during the conversation because, well…he’s Smoker. There’s a new One Piece game on the horizon, and this time it’s not being developed by Omega Force which means it’s not going to be another Pirate Warriors title! Wahoo! One Piece: Burning Blood was announced by Bandai Namco Entertainment recently and already it has been confirmed to be making it’s way to the West next year. Despite that, there’s not a great deal we know about this upcoming fighting game; we know that it won’t be like previously released One Piece titles, and we know that the gameplay mechanics will have a great deal to do with Haki and Logia users. This is news regarding an upcoming One Piece video game so, chances are, you’ve already heard everything you possibly could’ve about it. That’s just the way promotion works for new titles based on this highly-popular Shonen Jump series. Only recently, Bandai Namco Entertainment revealed the Spike Chunsoft-developed One Piece: Burning Blood, announcing that it will not only be getting a release across Japan but also throughout the West. What we, the pop culture-loving people, were not told was WHEN we would be seeing this title hit local shelves, and today…that’s exactly what Bandai Namco have announced. Lacking specifics, One Piece: Burning Blood is confirmed to be released in the West sometime in 2016 for not only the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita, but also for the Xbox One, making it the first One Piece video game title to cross the console border, previously only being released on Sony systems. About a week or so ago, I wrote an article regarding Bandai Namco Entertainment and their licensing of a video game name that went by the name Burning Blood. In this article I compared the name to that of the Japanese delinquent fight game Crows: Burning Edge, stating that there was a possibility that the company plan on bringing said game to the West under a new title. As it turns out…I’m dead wrong. The name Burning Blood actually belongs to a brand-new One Piece fighting game set to be released for the PlayStation Vita and the PlayStation 4. How do I know this now? Well Bandai Namco Entertainment announced this alongside a trailer for the upcoming One Piece game at this year’s Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia Press conference.
