The Fiery Rei Hino: Sailor Mars! – Interview with Cristina Vee at MadFest 2016

The inaugural Madfest Japanese Pop Culture Festival, run by Australia’s own Madman Entertainment, featured many guests. Out of them all, we at SnapThirty were given the opportunity to interview many, including the lovely Cristina Vee who, as you may know, is the voice of Sailor Moon’s own Rei Hino, also known as Sailor Mars. Alongside that huge role Cristina also lends her talents to Killua Zoldyck (Hunter X Hunter), Homura Akemi (Puella Magi Madoka Magica), Riruka Dokugamine (Bleach), Mamejiro (Blood Lad), Rei Hououmaru (Kill La Kill), Hawk (Seven Deadly Sins), and many, many more! We sat down to talk about all things Sailor Moon, Hunter X Hunter, and Pokemon as she attempted to catch herself an elusive Kangaskhan before leaving Australia, not knowing when she’ll next return. Spoiler alert: Sometime after the interview…she caught one! Woo hoo! Below is the video featuring the entire interview so sit back, relax, and enjoy our talk with the lovely Cristina Vee. -30-

With All Your Might – Anime and Manga’s Greatest Fights

Snap Discussion is the weekly round table discussion on a topic relating to Japanese pop culture as selected by the almighty Snapodile. Each week the SnapThirty team will weigh in with their thoughts on that week’s topic all with the hopes of providing some interesting and perhaps even conflicting view points on the matter at hand. This week’s topic is With All Your Might – Anime and Manga’s Greatest Fights. For this topic we each looked at some of the greatest fights. A good fight can thrill, but a great fight is an emotional rollercoaster that etches itself permanently into your mind long after its over. Here are some of our own personal favourites. Luke Halliday: For me, an unabashed Togashi fanatic, it should be no surprise what fight I have chosen for this week’s roundtable. It is of course the epic clash between Gon and Hisoka at Heaven’s Arena in Hunter x Hunter. While there are many other incredible fights in this series, none really hit the same level of pure emotion and gravitas …

Friendship, Effort and Victory: The Spirit of Shonen Jump

Snap Discussion is the weekly round table discussion on a topic relating to Japanese pop culture as selected by the almighty Snapodile. Each week the SnapThirty team will weigh in with their thoughts on that week’s topic all with the hopes of providing some interesting and perhaps even conflicting view points on the matter at hand. This week’s topic is Friendship, Effort and Victory: The Spirit of Shonen Jump. For this topic we each looked at the legendary manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump and the iconic series that made themselves home in the pages of the magazine. Viz Media has called Shonen Jump manga ‘The World’s Most Popular Manga’ and it is hard to debate them on that. Here are some of our own personal experiences. Luke Halliday: For those who have followed our site, you’d likely have come to discover that it is no secret that I am a superfan of Yoshihiro Togashi and his manga. So I’d be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to once again talk about how good Togashi …

Viz Media Reveals Partial English Dub Cast For Hunter X Hunter Anime

The year 1999 was a wonderful one at that; Bill Gates was officially announced as the world’s wealthiest individual, hit HBO series The Soprano’s made it’s television debut, the Sega Dreamcast was released across America alongside Sonic Adventure, and Nippon Animation tried their hand at making a Hunter X Hunter Anime series. Many, many years later, in 2011, Studio Madhouse did something that Nippon Animation simply could not; produce a Hunter X Hunter Anime that will blow audiences away like none have done before it. Standing as one of the greatest Shonen Jump Anime adaptations, the more recent Hunter X Hunter Anime series follows the story of Gon Freecss; a Hunters searching for his estranged father. Sticking as close to it’s source material as possible, the Anime rocked audiences week to week from October of 2011 to September of 2014. Ever since the series began streaming through Western Anime distribution service Crunchyroll, English-speaking fans have been waiting for a dub of the series that will, hopefully, do it justice. Not too long ago it was announced …

Being a Hunter x Hunter Fan and the Reality of Hiatus x Hiatus

Big news broke for fans of Yoshihiro Togashi’s infrequently published yet utterly brilliant shonen manga epic, Hunter x Hunter. After roughly 2 years having passed since the series last went on hiatus due to ‘intense back pain’, Togashi is slated to return this April continuing with the Dark Continent arc which he began 2 years and about 5 chapters ago. Fans of the series are no stranger to Togashi’s frequent hiatuses, even spawning the affectionate nickname for the series ‘Hiatus x Hiatus’. There is even a website dedicated entirely to tracking the series many hiatuses in a series of detailed graphs and charts. Here is one of them: As you can see the red indicates the hiatuses, which actually surpass the amount of time the series was actually printed in Shonen Jump. Fascinating stuff. You can check out more fascinating hiatus charts at http://hiatus-hiatus.rhcloud.com/ It does raise the interesting question though; how does one sustain their love for a series that is on break more than it isn’t? Being a fan of the Hunter x Hunter series …

The Stars Align As The Hunter X Hunter Manga Returns From Hiatus Once Again

Just before we move on; does anyone know if a new Dragon Quest game is about to be released? I only ask because it’s a known fact that Hunter X Hunter Mangaka Yoshihiro Togashi happens to adore those games and, in the past, their release has lead to many a hiatus for this long-running series. No, it doesn’t look like it, and seeing as though Dragon Quest Builders has already been released over in Japan, I think we’re in the clear! All jokes aside, the reason why Hunter X Hunter has been on hiatus since 2014 is not because of Togashi-sensei’s addiction to the award-winning JRPG series, it is in fact due to lower back pain that he has been unable to continue with the series. Originally, back in 2014, this hiatus was not meant to be such, but instead a two week break while he recovers. Unfortunately it seems as though the issue only got worse as time went on, leading to the two year break fans of the series have had to endure. …

Schwing! – This Strange Hisoka Figure From Hunter X Hunter Has Exciting Potential

Have we all seen the hit Anime series Hunter X Hunter? If you haven’t…make sure you don’t tell fellow site writer Luke Halliday. He is ravenous when it comes to all things Hunter X Hunter. Chances are, even if you haven’t had the opportunity to experience this hard-hitting Shonen series for yourself, you probably know quite a bit about it. It’s only one of THE most popular series’ of all time, you’re bound to know a little bit about it. There’s a character named Hisoka who, I suppose, you could fit into the category of ‘Bad Guy’, but not for long enough to cement him in as a detrimental part of protagonist Gon’s overall journey to find his father. In fact, often at times, Hisoka actually helps. Regardless, good or bad in action, Hisoka is a terrible human being at heart. Everything he does, he does strictly for his own pleasure and benefit. If that just so happens to help one party, than I suppose it’s their lucky day. Simply as that. Hisoka has this strange …

‘Hunter x Hunter’ Anime To Get English Dub By VIZ Media

For fans of Hunter x Hunter this news has been a long time coming. Not only was the 2011 anime adaptation of the Hunter x Hunter manga a rousing success both artistically and critically it was every Hunter x Hunter fans dream come true. After over a decade having passed since the inception of the awful 1999 anime adaptation the series was rebooted and wound up being one of the greatest shonen anime adaptations of all time in this writer’s opinion. Now we have the news fans have been waiting for, VIZ Media have just announced that they have licensed the series and will be dubbing it into English. This is some fantastic news to say the very least and long overdue. The 2011 anime adaptation has been critically acclaimed and as the years rolled on and the series came to its conclusion in episode 148 many thought that an English dub would never come to fruition. Thankfully we were all wrong and VIZ Media will have the honors of localizing the series. While no …

J-Stars Victory Vs+ – PlayStation 4 Review

Have you ever thought about the ramifications of Goku’s Kamehameha going up against Yusuke Urameshi’s Spirit Gun? When two unstoppable forces collide, the destruction caused by it is immense. Now think, what if a powerhouse like Naruto Uzumaki went head-to-head with a speed demon like Ichigo Kurosaki. Which would win; Uzumaki’s Rasengan of Kurosaki’s Getsuga Tensho? Disregarding the millions of dollars worth of collateral damage, who would come out on top? Questions like this are constantly thrown across tables of like-minded pop culture fans all discussing their favorite characters from their favorite pieces of media, each with their own theories regarding who would best who in combat. Usually those questions can never be answer, but it is with the release of crossover fighting titles like J-Stars Victory Vs+ that it all becomes just a little bit clearer. Not since the Japan-only Nintendo DS title Jump Ultimate Stars have we seen this many Shonen Jump heroes and villains come together to throw down in the combined arena. Ever since it was announced for a Japanese release, Western …

Hunter x Hunter on Hiatus Until God Knows When

As we previously reported, the Hunter x Hunter manga went on hiatus due to Yoshihiro Togashi, the series creator, suffering severe back pain at his work desk. News has just broke through the latest Weekly Shonen Jump that the hiatus for Hunter x Hunter has continued because Togashi is still undergoing treatment in hospital. It was said that Togashi was even unable to sit at his desk as a result of the crippling back pain. As of now the manga is on hiatus indefinitely. No return date has been set for the manga and with the additional bad news of the anime’s imminent ending, I’d say it is a pretty crummy time to be a Hunter x Hunter fan. I for one hope he gets the treatment he needs and heals up soon. Stay tuned for more information on this developing story. -30-

‘Hunter x Hunter’ anime series coming to an end at Episode 148

Sad news for Hunter x Hunter fans with word coming through that the anime adaptation of the enduring shonen manga will wrap up its run at episode 148. The news broke thanks to Megumi Han, the voice of series protagonist Gon Freecss confirming on her official blog that she has finished all of her recording for the series and that she is saddened by the conclusion of the anime. Anime News Network posted a translation of the blog which you can see below: “Now that I’ve talked about the turning point for this column, there’s something I want to talk about. The other day, at Sanbunzaka Studio, the place of all the beginnings, we conducted the recording for episode 148 of Hunter x Hunter, which will serve as the turning point for the anime for now. I will not say “final episode” myself. I will be stubborn and only call it “episode 148.” I say this, because in terms of episode numbers, in a certain meaning, this will be the final episode, but I feel …

Hunter x Hunter manga going on hiatus for a week

Yoshihiro Togashi is at it again! Following next week’s chapter of Hunter x Hunter, the series will once again be going onto hiatus, except this time it will only be for one week, likely due to Togashi having a week long celebration of Dragon Quest’s recent Guiness World Record win. Thankfully the series will only be going on hiatus for a week, it is a much more tolerable amount of time than the 2 and half year hiatus that preceeded this one. Since the return of the manga the series has run for a total of 5 chapters and has dived head first into the Dark Continent arc. The manga will return on July 14th with chapter 346. So until that day comes I suppose we might as well celebrate Dragon Quest because it is awesome and what not. -30-

A Royal Affliction – Examining Hunter x Hunter’s ‘Chimera Ant King’

Now that the dust has settled on the animated version of what will go down as one of the greatest stories told in anime, Hunter x Hunter’s the Chimera Ant arc, I feel now is an appropriate time to examine the journey of the star of the arc, the Chimera Ant King himself Meruem. Of course be warned that what follows is heavy in spoilers on the Chimera Ant Arc. While the King initially appears to be an explicitly evil creature and is even referred to as such by other characters, slowly but surely he changes into something more, something unlike anything the shonen genre has ever seen. His development is one of the most interesting and captivating in anime and his journey is simply unforgettable. Our early introduction to the character shows him as a violent and apathetic being who knows nothing but his unbridled power’s command over all. By the time the arc comes to a conclusion he has learned that there are other kinds of power and has ultimately gained the ability to …
