Anime of the Year Awards 2015

Welcome to SnapThirty’s second annual ‘Anime of the Year Awards’ for the Year of 2015. It has been a wild ride for anime fans with countless classics making a major impact on the anime community and industry. Over the past year we have seen blood used as a weapon, we have witnessed city wide destruction on multiple occasions, learned how to assassinate our teacher, felt the true force of a single punch, joined the fight with Tekkadan, sang along to Bump of Chicken’s ‘Hello World’ in broken Japanese, saw life unfold from the bar stools of Quindecim and saw a topless doctor perform surgery in the middle of a Vietnam war battlefield. ‘Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans’ The Subject of Complaints From Concerned Parents in Japan

If you have watched the new Gundam series, Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, you are no doubt acquainted with the no nonsense iron-blooded protagonist Mikazuki, a product of his corrupt environment who has an almost biblical view of the world around him. Fans of the series would no doubt be familiar with the shocking scene in episode 3 in which the young teenage protagonist Mikazuki slays his commanding officers after they had fled battle leaving his comrades to die. While many fans found this to be an utterly compelling scene with immense implications and potential consequences down the line, some parents in Japan felt otherwise. The scene and the character of Mikazuki in particular have become the subject of a series of complaints made to the Japanese Broadcasting Ethics and Program Improvement Organization who claim to have received a cavalcade of complaints from concerned viewers over a scene depicting “several nonresistant prisoners and enemy soldiers are gunned down by the young male protagonist.” Interestingly the parents complaining about the scene feared that it would influence their children …

First Thoughts: Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans – THIS IS GUNDAM!

Now that is what I’m talking about! This is Gundam, pure unadulterated Mobile Suit Gundam and it is about damn time. After a bit of a drought, the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise returns to good form with an uproar and a fist rebellious pumping into the air. Iron-Blooded Orphans is the Gundam series we have been dying for since Gundam 00. This is the series we had wished Reconguista in G could have been. This is Gundam at its finest. Right out of the gate Iron-Blooded Orphans sets the stage and over the course of a glorious 23 minutes builds up to a climactic conflict boiling over all of the political and personal drama in grand fashion. The series takes place in the distant future in which Mars has become colonized and serves as essentially a mining planet for Earth. One of the Martian royals feels that Mars should become an autonomous state separate from Earth’s control and as it often goes in typical Gundam fashion, you know what hits the fan.   Iron-Blooded Orphans …
