Oh how refreshing it is to be back in a world where Digimon games are seeing a Western release. No sarcasm there, simply genuine happiness. Doubly so considering that it is one of the few franchises that has tried to make use of the PS Vita, otherwise known as the world’s most under-utilised gaming device. That being said, Bandai Namco’s latest trailer for Digimon World: Next Order may just show reason for people’s aversion to the console. Handheld in nature, the Vita has never, and will never, compete visually with its more powerful, home-locked brother. Combined with the comparative lack of large scale releases, the Vita has seen far less attention outside of Japan. Of course this is a self fulfilling prophecy, as the lack of sales results in companies not porting to the Vita, resulting in a lack of sales, resulting in a lack of ports to the console. The Digital World, home to programs, annoying pop-up advertisements and an assortment of monsters who range from cute hairballs to titanic dragon knights whose very existence threatens the stability of whichever world it lives in. So, knowing that, of course you want to visit it…right? Of course you do, so let’s go! Back to a world we all (obviously) remember from the days of old when PlayStations had no number after their names and controllers had an option to turn off analog sticks. It was a weird time. Still, it was one that bore the original Digimon World, a game which allowed us to live our dreams of venturing into a plane unlike our own, travel with an ever changing friend and build an awesome city that absolutely had a shop that specialised in slabs of meat and another that was a tournament legal fighting ring. Since the Digital Monsters first graced our collective childhoods, there has been a desire to witness the world in which they live, a desire met by the handily titled Digimon World. Spun into a franchise across the years, these games have provided stories to whet the appetites of those who wish to take their favourite Digimon friends and hit evil really, really hard, often in the face or faces  (depending on their respective constitutions). Of course, the more recent of these do good adventures have been limited to Japanese audiences, what with localisation and all, though hopefully the soon to release in the west Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth will bring a resurgence of the franchise outside its country of origin. Owing to its place within a pre-established franchise, Next Order promises gameplay elements similar to those that have graced Worlds prior. Providing the player with a protagonist male or female protagonist avatar and two digital companions, the game also promises a story of combat, villainy and mystery, or so it is gathered from the trailer. …
