Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire – Mega Latios, Latias, Steelix and Glalie Revealed

Don’t they just have the cutest smiles?

Whew. That’s a whole bunch of Mega faces to add to the list. Unfortunately for the sake of surprise, certain individuals had already revealed the existence of the Mega Eon Duo back in X and Y (Via some code hacking that I shan’t attempt to understand. Regardless, it’s now official and the Dragon/Psychic Legendaries are looking faster than ever. Half dragon, half bird, half fighter jet. Awesome. Interestingly, the duo loses their distinctive colouration and both shift to a purple hue. Just one of the many possibilities of Mega Evolution I guess.

Speaking of Mega reveals, some astute players of the Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire demo have stumbled upon some new members of this ever expanding club. Within the Japanese demo, it was found that the Iron Snake Steelix possesses more power than previously believed, rockin’ a pretty intense new form (complete with diamonds and a support ring of metal). Not to be outdone, players of the Korean demo also happened upon Mega Glalie, who looks a bit more confident in showing off those pearly whites. Ability wise, Steelix comes with Sand Force (Ground-type, Rock-type and Steel-type moves have their power increased 33% in a Sandstorm) and Galie with Refrigerate (Increase the power of Normal-type moves by 30%, then change move to Ice-type).

Unfortunately, in light of these reveals, it has been revealed that there will be no patch for X and Y to include these new Mega Forms, so you’ll have to pick yourself up a copy of Alpha or Sapphire if you feel like expanding your roster. In all honesty though it’s no big deal, I mean you’ve never been able to retroactively get new Pokemon in the older games.

On the topic of new additions, the Latios/Latias reveal trailer also showcased the new ability of the Duo: Soaring. Taking to the skies far above Hoenn, Trainers now have the chance to control themselves whilst flying between destinations, with the ability to land anywhere at anytime. Much like travelling on the ground, it is possible to encounter wild Pokemon both normal (represented as a flock of birds) and otherwise (represented by a swirling mass of black clouds). These special encounter areas, known as Mirage Spots, only become accessible after certain requirements are met and contain within them Legendary Pokemon from various games. Essentially, all but Event Legendaries may be captured in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, so look forward to quite a hunt. I know I am.
