Grave Of The Fireflies Review

“Why do fireflies have to die so soon?” Some would say it’s not fair. As seen in Studio Ghibli’s seminal anime masterpiece Grave of the Fireflies, life isn’t fair. Based on the autobiographical novel by Akiyuki Nosaka of the same name, Grave of the Fireflies is one of the most realistic portrayals of the tragedy and struggles of living in a war torn country ever captured in film. Grave of the Fireflies is unquestionably one of the best anime films there has been or ever will be. Grave of the Fireflies is set in Japan in the time of World War 2. It follows Seita and Setsuko, a brother and sister trying to survive in these harsh times, the film explores their tragic lives as victims of war and underlines it with a sense of hope that maybe everything can be okay. Where Grave of the Fireflies cuts the deepest is in the fact that in war there is no happy endings for anyone. Seita is portrayed as a doting brother who is desperately trying to cling to any …

Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire Review

It has been 12 years since Pokemon fans first got to journey throughout the world of Hoenn, but now players get to experience the same journey in a different way. Ruby and Sapphire have been reimagined into the same style as Pokemon X and Y and it has brought Ruby and Sapphire back to their once glorious selves. Pokemon fans who loved Pokemon X and Y are going to love Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Whether you have ventured in Hoenn before or you’re a new traveler, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire proves to be an exciting experience for all. Just like the originals you wake up in a moving van as you move into your new home in Littleroot town. This time however things are a little different, for starters the intro sequence was filled with references and nods to the original games, a little love letter to the fans. The premise is about as ‘classic Pokemon’ as it gets: you’re a kid who wants to be a Pokemon trainer and then you do …

‘Natural Doctrine’ Review

Natural Doctrine is a tactical JRPG from Kadokawa Games, the people behind games such as Kantai Collection and The Lunar RPG Series. Natural Doctrine is reminiscent of games like Dark Souls in terms of the incredible difficulty. The game goes beyond the point of being just challenging – in fact it gets to the point of being punishing, which could be good or bad depending on your preferences. Natural Doctrine is a game that will be loved by some and hated by many. This game is brutal. The game follows the poorly named Geoff who is essentially every JRPG protagonist ever rolled into one and nothing more. The game has next to no story at all but what it does have focuses on the concept of natural selection. While it is an interesting idea the game rarely gives players any context for the situations they find themselves in. The story is simply weak at best and the characters are terrible at worst. In terms of the gameplay, the combat system is interesting but grows very old very quick. It appears to have more …

‘Fairy Fencer F’ Review

Fairy Fence F is a JRPG from Compile Heart, the wildly popular Japanese developer who brought you games such as Record of Agarest War, Cross Edge and the iconic Puzzle Mate! It mixes the visual novel style with dungeon crawling RPG elements making what is a niche experience that some will love while leaving others feeling that this game has very little to offer. Despite the fact that this game is not for everyone, for those who are into this style of game prepare to devote an insane amount of hours of your life to the wonderful world of Fairy Fencer F. The game follows Fang, a fairly generic protagonist, rude and ridiculously straightforward but could be considered honest, he also tends to laze around and also has quite an insatiable appetite. Basically the badass character from nearly every anime ever. The story revolves around the aftermath of a conflict between two gods. The gods created special weapons known as furies and the only people who can wield the furies are fencers, the furies are said to be very …

Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire – Rayquaza is Mega Evolving?

Nintendo has released a new trailer for Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire revealing Rayquaza in the game along side a number of mega evolutions. Could Rayquaza be next in line to be getting a mega evolution in the near future? While it isn’t shown in the video one can presume that Rayquaza will be getting a mega evolution along side Kyogre and Groudon. Check out the video below. What mega evolutions would you like to see? I sure would like to see a mega Swalot or Slaking. We’re now only two months away from the official worldwide release of the game on the 21st of November (28th in Europe…sorry, Euro gamers) and anticipation could not be higher! Let the trumpets sound as we fly back in time, revisiting old friends, re-battling old enemies and reliving one hell of an awesome adventure! -30-

Yu Yu Hakusho Manga Getting a Reprint?

Seeing as the Hunter x Hunter anime is coming to an end and the manga going on another hiatus until god knows when, Viz Media has decided to give fans a Yoshihiro Togashi fix and will be reprinting Togashi’s Shonen Jump hit Yu Yu Hakusho. Yu Yu Hakusho tells the tale of Yusuke Urameshi, a high school delinquent, who is hit by a truck trying to save the life of a child. After a series of events Yusuke ultimately agrees to become a spirit detective for the afterlife. All 19 volumes of the manga will be reprinted and also available digitally on platforms including their own site/app, iBookstore, Kindle, Nook and Google play. I strongly suggest you pick them up if you have never read the series as I think its one of the best shonen series of all time. REPRINT ALERT!: All volumes of YuYu Hakusho are resurrected…just like Yusuke! #backinprint #comics #manga pic.twitter.com/jHMouZjtWc — VIZ (@VIZMedia) September 11, 2014 -30-

Hunter x Hunter on Hiatus Until God Knows When

As we previously reported, the Hunter x Hunter manga went on hiatus due to Yoshihiro Togashi, the series creator, suffering severe back pain at his work desk. News has just broke through the latest Weekly Shonen Jump that the hiatus for Hunter x Hunter has continued because Togashi is still undergoing treatment in hospital. It was said that Togashi was even unable to sit at his desk as a result of the crippling back pain. As of now the manga is on hiatus indefinitely. No return date has been set for the manga and with the additional bad news of the anime’s imminent ending, I’d say it is a pretty crummy time to be a Hunter x Hunter fan. I for one hope he gets the treatment he needs and heals up soon. Stay tuned for more information on this developing story. -30-

The Origins of Dragon Quest Explained by Series Creator Yuji Horii

Square Enix has released a video featuring Yuji Horii, the creator of Dragon Quest, talking about the origins of the wildly popular RPG series. Before creating Dragon Quest, Horii had worked on adventure games almost exclusively. However he became interested in creating RPG games because he liked the ideas of character building, simplified gameplay and more complex story telling. He mentions that his original goal was to create a fun game that anyone could play. In my opinion he succeeded considering he has made generations of fans addicted to his games. You can check out the video below for Yuji Horii’s full comments on the origins of Dragon Quest. -30-
