Yo Ho Ho? There’s Now Going To Be A One Piece Live-Action Film?!

Shrunken-Luffy-Image-01I have to say, reader; I’ve begun feeling like a broken record as of late. It seems as though I’ve written quite a few news pieces regarding live-action film adaptations as of late, and they only seem to keep coming. Just yesterday it was revealed that Tokyo Ghoul will be getting it’s very own live-action film, and today, thanks to an announcement by Shanghai Minghuan Investment, it seems as though the Shonen Jump classic series One Piece will be the next to receive the same adaptation treatment. At least…that’s the plan.

Announced through Business Wire about twelve hours ago, Shanghai Minghuan has purchased the copyright for One Piece from Eiichiro Oda and Shonen Jump for 1.6 Billion Yen (US$15 Million), and plans to use said copyright to produce a live-action film based, roughly, on the long-running series. From what we’re lead to believe, plans to develop a One Piece film of this kind have been in place for quite some time, with the only thing holding the company back being that of the copyright restraints, but now that they’re in complete ownership, well…the sky’s the limit.

Already announced to be starring in the upcoming film is Masataka Kubota (Death Note television series),  playing Monkey D. Luffy, who was voted by fans as the actor they’d most like to see play said character. Revealed alongside Kubota to have a starring role in the upcoming film is Chinese pop idol Xie Leilei who will be playing the recently-introduced character Charlotte Purin, simply because she is known as “The Girl from One Piece” due to her likeness to the character she’s now set to play. This means that the film will centre, perhaps, around the Manga’s latest arc.

As of right now, production has not begun, but thanks to the acquisition of this copyright it is only a matter of time before it begins.

  1. Omg this will be interesting to see. I’m not sure how good it will be especially how eccentric the characters are.

  2. Live action movies don’t really do so great and go as far as to shit all over the plot of the source material, take the attack on titan live movie for example where Mikasa hates Erens guts.Tokyo ghoul feels like its heading in the same diection but theres still hope for onepiece >.>
