Plus Ultra Beasts! – Pokemon Sun and Moon Reveal Some Interesting New Characters

Since its reveal, Pokemon Sun and Moon have been doing some new things with the tried and true formula of the Pocket Monster universe. No gyms, new forms and some of the strangest naming conventions to date have polarised Pokemaniacs the world over. However, in its latest release, Sun and Moon may have just one upped themselves. With a whole new faction joining the fray and two Pokemon who are tenuously described as such, this upcoming adventure in Alola may just be the strangest one yet. And there’s been a shapeshifting alien virus in the canon for years, so you know this is seriously off kilter.

Alolan Raticate

CATEGORY Mouse Pokémon
TYPE Dark/Normal
HEIGHT 2’04”
WEIGHT 56.2 lbs.
ABILITY Gluttony/Hustle

Because urban areas are their main habitat, their diet is higher in calories than ordinary Raticate. As a result, they have become hefty.

Alolan Raticate prefers to eat only fresh fruits and high-class ingredients. There are rumors that a certain top-notch restaurant takes advantage of Alolan Raticate’s taste buds by bringing it along when choosing ingredients to buy, and having it taste test new dishes.

Alolan Raticate continually stockpile huge amounts of food in their nests. They mostly prefer to send out Alolan Rattata to gather food while they themselves stay home in their nests and just eat.

Alolan Raticate is the Totem Pokémon of the trial that takes place in Verdant Cavern on Melemele Island in Pokémon Moon.* It summons Rattata to help it confront those who take on the trial.

*Gumshoos appears as the Totem Pokémon in Verdant Cavern in Pokémon Sun.

My Alolan Raticate, what big cheeks you have…and what a large network of loyal underlings you have. Also, you have puffy cheeks and look funny, like you’re in the middle of seeing how many jellybeans you can fit in your mouth, or you’re trying really hard not to laugh at something that’s really, really funny. Hehehe.

CATEGORY Scaly Pokémon
TYPE Dragon
WEIGHT 65.5 lbs.
ABILITY Bulletproof/Soundproof

Jangmo-o has the pride of a warrior, although it remains humble about its capabilities. In its pursuit to become stronger, it never neglects its training.

Because Jangmo-o uses the scales on its head for both offense and defense, it never turns its back to its enemies. Many Trainers see this behavior and take it as proof that Jangmo-o is a valiant Pokémon.

Jangmo-o gather in harsh locales like canyons, where no other people or Pokémon are around, to live together as they train.

Awww yiss, another Dragon. Yeah, I know that there have been a few new ones added thus far, including Alolan Exeggutor, but look at this guy. Isn’t he awesome? Also, he seems like the most pseudo-Legendary-esque addition to the new roster and I am eagerly expecting a wicked cool heart dragon to appear in the future. But, in the meantime, look at his little face!

Type: Null

CATEGORY Synthetic Pokémon
TYPE Normal
HEIGHT 6’03”
WEIGHT 265.7 lbs.
ABILITY Battle Armor

This Pokémon wearing a mask has been dubbed “Null,” meaning nothing.

The shapes of its front and hind legs are clearly different. The reason is that Type: Null was constructed to synthesize the strengths of various Pokémon, enabling it to adapt to any situation.

The mask fitted to Type: Null’s head is a piece of equipment designed to control its latent powers. It’s extremely heavy, so it also serves to hinder Type: Null’s agility.

To complete a certain mission, there was need of a Pokémon powerful enough to rival those Pokémon often spoken of in mythology.

This one is an enigma, a mysterious enigma that I personally think is pretty neat. A chimera built for the express purpose of defeating Legendary Pokemon, Type: Null most assuredly has some secrets below that power restrictive armour. Secrets that will probably be revealed should it ever be removed (*hint hint*). Also, from the perspective of a long time fan who has lived through the rumours that permeated in the era before immediate access to the internet, the idea of a chimera Pokemon (like Venastoise) wearing armour (like First Movie Mewtwo) in-game is amazing.

In addition to these lovely new faces, Sun and Moon has rather suddenly made it apparent that a new breed of creature shall roam the realm of Alola; Ultra Beasts. Possessive of tremendous powers and surrounded in a heaping helping of uncertainty, these unique creatures are feared by humanity due to their intentions lying unknown. Though, it would seem that the Aether Foundation is conducting research on them regardless…

UB-01’s body is composed of a glass-like substance. However, it’s constantly changing shapes, never settling on one.

While evidence of something like a survival instinct can be observed in UB-01, no one knows whether it has a will of its own or any emotions. It’s said that, for some reason, its movements resemble those of a young girl.

I don’t…I don’t even know where to start with this one. A creepy glass jellyfish that moves like a young girl and looks like a hat/hair combo fromsuch a girl is weird. Also, we have no idea if we fight these things, if we can catch these things or if their plot relevance renders them unobtainable…which kinda makes me want one…or want to help one…or be afraid of one…I’m so confused.

Speaking of Ultra Beasts, perhaps it is time to meet the lovely new faces gracing the Alola region under a single banner; the Aether Foundation. Proclaiming to care for Pokemon that have been hurt, they run the Aether Paradise, which just so happens to be an island they built…yeah, an island. Where do these organisations find the money to do this stuff? Like, buying an island is expensive, ludicrously so, these guys built one. How does one even get that much cash? The Game Corner? A well diversified portfolio? Pokemon?

The lovely Lusamine functions as the Aether Foundation’s president.

I’m gonna go ahead and say that, whilst the “lovely” descriptor is not wrong, it may not stretch to her personality. Not a fan of the way she said Pokemon are worthy of her love, like she’s all that and a bag of chips.

The Aether Foundation branch chief sports green sunglasses. They’re his signature accessory! He seems very proud of his position as branch chief.

Kinda putting a dampener on the Aether aesthetic here Faba. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure you’re a nice guy, but when the other revealed members are Lusamine and Wicke, there’s not a whole lot you could’ve done to stand out, sunglasses included.

The assistant branch chief of Aether Paradise has a caring personality, so she’s loved by all the Aether Foundation employees.

Don’t you just want to give her a hug? I do. She seems nice.

The employees of the Aether Foundation shelter and care for Pokémon. Their uniforms appear to depend on which division they belong to.

I wonder if they actually use those pouches for anything…

Not to be outdone, Team Skull also added a new member to their rosters in the form of a punkish boy with a fringe anyone would be jealous of. Also, given his in trailer smack talk, this guy will definitely be an obstacle on the journey of Alolan Trainers. Especially once you learn about his ally…

This young man lends his strength to Team Skull as an enforcer. He places a high value on being strong in Pokémon battles. His partner Pokémon is the mysterious Type: Null.

His clothes are ripped because he doesn’t care about your social conventions and his hair shows just how extremely he believes in his individuality. Society is an illusion, wake up sheeple!

As far as gameplay goes, it has also been revealed that Pokemon Sun and Moon take place exactly 12 hours apart from each other. What this means for players is that when it is day in one version, it shall be night in the other…because of how time works. Now, the exact details of what this means for gameplay are yet to be fully explored, although it has been revealed that the previously showcased Totem Pokemon Gumshoos will be replaced by Alolan Raticate in Moon. Whether this applies to all Totems and challenge is, once again, unknown, but it at least gives us a hint towards version differences. One new feature that will be present in both games however is the Zygarde Cube. Gifted to players by Dexio and Shina (the Proffessor’s assistants from X and Y), this strange item will allow for the collection of Zygarde Cores and Cells. Now, for those unaware, these are the building blocks for the Legendary Pokemon Zygarde and the amount which gather are directly linked to which form it can take. So keep those collector eyes open and collect the necessary parts to build yourself a titan.

And there you have it, a whole lotta crazy bound up in a whole lotta Pokemon lore. Zygardes and Foundations and Raticates and Ultra Beasts and Day/Night cycles…its a lot to take in. So much so that I’m not even going to elucidate on the final feature revealed to be a part of Sun and Moon. But don’t worry, you’ll figure it out. It’ll be a Snap.
