Beauty Who? – The Boy and the Beast Hits AU & NZ Cinemas this March

If you’ve been paying attention to anime films as of late, you would know that over the past decade a director by the name of Mamoru Hosoda has been an absolute powerhouse, pumping out great film after great film. If you don’t know him by name, you probably know him by movie. Firstly there was The Girl Who Leapt through Time, his first major film outside of an established franchise, followed a few years later by Summer Wars, a personal favourite of mine, and then most recently there was Wolf Children. If I didn’t know any better, Hosoda is well on his way to becoming the next Miyazaki, hell people have even pointed out the clear influences of Miyazaki in Wolf Children.

That’s right, I said it

No I’m serious, Hosoda’s work easily rivals the great Miyazaki. If you don’t believe me, look at how big Hosoda’s main three movies have been around the world, it’s getting to the stage of how “The Great One’s” original three were. Honestly, it gets me excited to see what Hosoda and Co. release in the future, especially as the quality of anime only goes up from here. Say for example, a brand new beast of a film? A film that will make people say “Oh boy, this was an absolute amazing film!

Kobato 3~

The Boy and the Beast centres around Kyuta, a young boy who’s more on the lonely side of society, who has a run in with Kumatetsu, our ‘beast’ for this film, and accidentally finds a portal to Kumatetsu’s home world, “Shibutenmachi”, the ‘bakemono realm’; a place that should not cross paths with our own. Without a family, or a real place to call ‘home’, Kyuta decides to go with Kumatetsu and become his pupil. Things don’t start well between the two however, think of it like a married couple who bicker over everything, but as time progresses their friendship grows stronger. The adventure that follows is said to be one that goes far beyond our imagination.

Now in my own personal opinion, because I know that you guys just love hearing them from me, The Boy and the Beast is looking, and sounding, to be one of the best movies of the year and I’m willing to bet that it’ll also be one of the best of this decade. I’m a complete sucker for action films, live action and animated, and the fact that it is from the guy who made Summer Wars, again a personal favourite of mine because of the action and because of how amazing the story was with it, just puts the final nail in the coffin for me. I’ll say it again and again if I have to, but this will be a must watch.

The Boy and the Beast will be available to watch in select cinemas in Australia and New Zealand from March the 3rd in original Japanese audio, of course with English subs, and from March the 5th if you prefer your anime shows and/or films to be English dubbed.
