Bandai Shows Off The Digimon 20th Anniversary V-Pet’s Tag Battle System In New Video

Months ago, Bandai revealed to the world that they would be re-releasing their original Tamagotchi off-shoot, the Digimon V-Pet, in celebration of its 20th Anniversary. This comes as a follow up to three other Digimon Digivice upgrade and redistribution projects and I have a sneaking suspicion that it wont be the last.

The new device, titled Digimon 20th Anniversary V-Pet, will not only be a physical replication of the original but will come with heavily upgraded gameplay mechanics that will give Tamers access to a slew of Digimon, new and old, as well as new levels of Digivolution, and new ways to battle with friends. One of which happens to be the “Tag Battle” system that has been coded into the device’s software so as to allow four monster battles.

The Japanese video game pop culture website 4Gamer recently held quite the interview with the staff in charge of the Digimon 20th Anniversary V-Pet, and whilst many of the questions answered were done so in a mostly vague manner, only revealing information already done so through the official website for the device, it was brought to light that the current team working on the 20th Anniversary edition were all huge fans of the original release and children and intend to revitalise what was once so loved about the franchise and its community.

Now, perhaps the most exciting piece of media to come from the interview that 4Gamer held with Bandai staff is the two-minute long video of the Digimon 20th Anniversary V-Pet in action. Being able to raise two Digital Monsters at the one time with the re-release also means that you can battle with them. Not only that, you can use two Digimon to battle with other Tamers who are also using two Digimon, making it a four monster battle. This is what the development team are calling “Tag Battles“, and it is showcased in the video provided by 4Gamer post-interview.

Pre-orders for the product have been open for quite some time, with the expected release date to be this June as to coincide with the original release of the V-Pet which took place on the 26th of June in 1997. Those of you who pre-order before the 27th of March will be able to receive their items within the first batch shipped, but those who don’t will have to wait for an undetermined amount of time. It has been revealed that the items has pre-sold far greater than expectations so the chance of it getting multiple shipments across the year is more likely than not.
