Quick Thoughts on Nintendo Anime Channel

So the other day Frank drugged and dragged me into the game store just to buy Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate in what was a re-enactment of Weekend at Bernie’s. I woke up with a copy of Monster Hunter in my hand and the 3DS already turned on, so I decided to just go ahead and play, and not question why Frank’s purple fedora was resting on my bed. But before I could get into Monster Hunter, my 3DS surprised me with a download it had done without my permission, it was none other than the Nintendo Anime Channel that I learned about at Nintendo Direct not long ago. This app is completely free, and in fact your 3DS will simply insist you own it. The 3DS YouTube app may have been useless, but the Nintendo Anime Channel proves to be otherwise. The Nintendo Anime Channel is a simplified streaming service that allows you to enjoy anime on the go, and the content here is Nintendo’s own home-grown anime product. At this point there are eight …

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD – Gameplay overview Trailer Released + “Episode Duscae” Demo Showcase

Can you seriously believe that “Final Fantasy Type-0 HD” is only about a month away from getting a full release? There’s some part of me that just comprehend it. It feels like Western gamers have been waiting years to get their hands on this game and…well, actually, it HAS been years…the original “Final Fantasy Type-0” was released on the PlayStation Portable. Wow. Anywho, to celebrate the almost-release of the new “Final Fantasy” title, Square Enix have released a brand-new trailer that basically combines everything we’ve seen over the past couple of months. Coming straight from the European Active Time Report in London, this trailer leads wonderfully into the final stretch of the game’s release. Bring on “Type-0”, baby! We’re ready! As aa little bonus to add on to the end of the “Final Fantasy Type-0 HD” trailer is another little video from the same event that shows audiences even more of what they can expect in the upcoming “Final Fantasy XV – Episode Duscae” demo that will come complimentary with any pre-order of “Type-0 HD. …

First Thoughts: ‘Black Clover’ Manga – What’s Luck Got To Do With It?

Hungry Joker may not be a name familiar to many, probably because it was a short lived Shonen Jump manga. A large part of why that series failed was that while it had potential it simply lacked direction or a grander vision. So what does a series that fell short of greatness have to do with the recently launched Black Clover manga? Well for one they share the same author, Yuki Tabata, but more over the thing that makes them such interesting companion reads is just how far Tabata has come as a mangaka because Black Clover succeeds in every way Hungry Joker didn’t. Right from the first page, Black Clover feels like a fully formed world with a deeply rooted history behind this fantasy setting. It was hard to not be reminded of manga such as One Piece and Naruto with their richly detailed in-world history. Furthermore the first chapter wastes little time setting up a narrative direction and momentum thrust. I am of the firm belief that great shonen manga all have three …

Heads Up, Western Gamers, “Dragon Quest Heroes” Is Coming Your Way!

Day after day, week after week, month after month, we continue to see more and more of what the upcoming “Dragon Quest Heroes” Action/RPG title has to offer but us living over in the West continue to think to ourselves; “but what if it doesn’t get a localisation?”. It’s scary to think that some of the best looking games don’t make it out of Japan but today Square Enix has wiped away our worries after announcing that the next instalment of the “Dragon Quest” series of video games will indeed be headed to the West sometime this year. That’s fantastic news, especially for those who’ve been following the series all these years! What’s even more exciting is that it will be the very first “Dragon Quest” title to be released on the PlayStation 4 which not only means better graphics but a higher quality of gameplay due to the consoles upgraded capabilities. To say the very least; “Dragon Quest Heroes” is going to be an incredible title that I’m sure won’t disappoint new and old …

Digimonstory Cybersleuth Promo Released

Greetings fellow Digimon fans who reside in the west, do you want to see something awesome yet upsetting at the same time? If you said yes, then you shall be amongst the many who will rue the existence of language barriers. Narrated by Maaya Sakamoto, in the guise of her character Kyoko Kyuremi, the promo explains the basic plot of the game. When a hacker one day wormed their way into the EDEN program, a “wonderful present” was offered to its users. As one may expect from a video game, this does not turn out to be moment of innocent kindness that people believed and our protagonist soon finds themselves within EDEN, along with a few recognisable faces. With real life locations, such as Akihabara, undergoing “digital shifts” (the sudden transformation of matter into data), our protagonist must team up with detective Kyoko Kuremi in order to solve this problem, as well as rescue their own physical body that has been trapped within the digital world. Doesn’t that sound awesome? Unfortunately, there’s still been no indication that …

Street Fighter V: The Return of Charlie Nash

Having been previously hinted in a previous trailer, Capcom has officially made it known that Street Fighter V will contain the re-introduction of one Charlie Nash. Previously believed to be dead, fans may notice one or two key differences in the returned Nash, namely the patches of flesh that don’t quite match the rest… First mentioned in Street Fighter II: The World Warrior (1991) by Guile during his quest for revenge; Nash was a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and one of Guile’s best friends. Although it was hinted that M.Bison was involved in Charlie’s disappearance in the past, it was never really fully explained… …until the Street Fighter Alpha series, that is. In Street Fighter Alpha II (1996) we see firsthand that a helicopter controlled by M.Bison’s forces make quick work of Nash as M.Bison gets away. Initially presumed to be dead by both friends and foes alike, Nash’s return shows that his story is far from over. While the mysteries surrounding his return will become clear later on, for now we’re pleased to …

Snap Play: “Advance Wars” Episode 05

We here at SnapThirty pride ourselves on never forgetting the things that lead us to be the fine young writers we are today. Our passion for Japanese Pop Culture was given birth many years ago during the times of our childhood and each day we try our very best to thank the video games, the Anime, the Manga and everything else from our pasts for simply being able to experience them. “Advance Wars” was one of the very first tactical role-playing games I ever laid eyes on and within but one mission I was hooked. I’d be in constant possession of my Game Boy Advanced whether I was at school, out with my parents, at a friends house and everywhere in between. The chance to play another round of “Advance Wars” would never pass me by simply because I was always prepared. Even though my young brain couldn’t fully understand each and every single gameplay mechanic, I still had the time of my life and now at the ripe old age of twenty I’ve decided to …

GACKT Strips Off For A Cuddle

Ladies, are you in the mood for a cuddle? GACKT sure is, so much so that he is stripping off for one, or many if you like. Well not exactly, but I’m sure this news will excite more than a few GACKT fans. Coming bundled with his upcoming single is a variety of cuddle pillows and bed sheets, which will help you to simulate actually being GACKT’s girlfriend or boyfriend without actually being that. The single will retail at roughly $133 Australian Dollars. But hey, if that’s price you need to pay for a cuddle with Japanese rock and visual kei legend GACKT then so be it. Source: Natalie -30-

Hyperdevotion Noire: Goddess Black Heart – Review

Anyone that’s ever touched a video game controller will know that the industry behind their favorite titles is one that is, for lack of a better term…cut-throat. Studios rise and fall each day, games get made, games get cancelled, games get good reviews and games get bad reviews. Some companies can gain high levels of popularity with one good title, others take years to attain even half of that fame. There are series’ that, while stale and now mostly unenjoyable, still stand tall at the very top of most “best seller” charts. The men and women behind the scenes are ruthless and will do most anything to have their game be received the best…sometimes that has nothing to do with actually making the game good. Money is made, money is lost and money is thrown around like it grows on trees. Look…what I’m getting at is that the video game industry is just as intense as the bosses featured in those games and it seems as though the only series OF video games that has …

Why Don’t You Play In Hell? – Review

In my short life as a pop culture critic there have only been about a handful of reviews I’ve found to be overly difficult to write. While small in number, memories of those hours writing are still very much burned into my mind. Thankfully, it’s not often a difficult one like that cones along. Even more fortunate is that, despite their writing difficulty, most of these hard reviews come with a complimentary funny story that I find I’m always sharing with fellow writers. Madman Entertainment – one of Australia’s leading Anime, Manga and foreign film distributors – has decided that I’ve gone long enough without difficulty and has thrown me one hell of a fastball. A fastball titled “Why Don’t You Play In Hell?”; one of the most convoluted but ultimately brilliant films I’ve ever laid eyes upon! There’s a war going on, but that won’t stop the inexperienced but eager wannabe film crew The Fuck Bombers from following their dreams of making the ultimate action epic. Ten years ago, yakuza mid-boss Ikegami led an …

Jormungand Complete Series Collection Review

Jormungand. The World Snake. Encircler of the globe and a being who once saw the very rays of the sun blocked from view. If you believe the legend. But what place does such a mythical tale have in a world of gun runners and warmongering? Is it the terrifying nom de guerre of a sinister foe? A warning for those who choose to listen? Or something more? Though the battlefield is where the world focuses most of its attention, there is an equally sinister domain lurking in the shadows. For those who stop to ponder the state of the world, one question arises; Where do the weapons come from? Arms dealers, gun runners, warmongers, proprietors of weaponry. Call them what you will, the end result is the same; instruments of war will find their way into the hands of those will use them…whether they’re willing to or not. An uncertainty explored by the main cast, though none moreso than Jonah. From a tragic past that thrust him on the path of war, this poor child …

Naruto The Movie: Road To Ninja – Review

Ever since my early high school days I’ve been a huge fan of Masashi Kishimoto’s “Naruto”. I followed both the Manga and Anime all the way up until the beginning of the second series “Shippuden” where I hit a steep decline in love for what was once one of the most important things in my life. Even as a fan of the early Anime, I never truly enjoyed the movies that came from it. “Ninja Clash In The Land Of Snow”, “Guardians Of The Crescent Moon Kingdom”, they just didn’t do the series I loved justice. “Shippuden” came around and alongside it a whole bunch of movies I too didn’t necessarily enjoy, but one DID pique my interest and it just so happens to be the newly released “Road To Ninja”. Something about an alternate universe story excites me but, as of recent times, “Naruto” has only come to disappoint. I’m hoping that, in this new universe, “Naruto” stayed as good as it once was all those years ago. – (Written prior to watching film) …

‘My Hero Academia’ to Get Print Release by Viz Media, With Great Power Comes Great Manga

Not long after they have begun their simultaneously digital chapter releases of My Hero Academia in their Weekly Shonen Jump app, Viz Media have just thrown down the major news that they will also be releasing the series in print. My Hero Academia is a commercial success in Japan with volumes of the manga flying off shelves across the country and many touting it as the next big thing in Shonen Jump (including us here at SnapThirty). The series follows Izuku Midoriya a quirkless nobody in a world where 80% of the population developed powers known as quirks. He wants to be a hero more than anything and an encounter with legendary hero All Might may just be his very own shot at a superhero origin story. Viz Media announced their print release will begin with the first volume releasing in August 2015. Stay tuned for more details on the release. Remember with great power comes great manga and boy oh boy is My Hero Academia great. -30-

NIS America Is Bringing Disgaea 5 To The West

We all saw this coming right? Of course! it would be an absolute travesty of the much-loved series of tactical RPGs’ newest title didn’t make it to local shores! I’d definitely be in an uproar and I’m sure I wouldn’t be alone. Well, alongside some great news regarding the localisation of “Danganronpa: Another Episode“, NIS America have today announced that they will also be bringing “Disgaea 5” to the West. Though no full english name has been disclosed, NIS America are very much certain that this PlayStation 4 exclusive will be released outside of Japan sometime this year. Of yes, that’s another thing; they didn’t announce exactly WHEN the game will be getting a release, just that it’ll happen sometime this year so stay on the lookout for that. No matter when we are able to get our hands on the new game, I can say for certain that it will get as high a reception as any of the previous “Disgaea” titles in the series. It’s a fan favorite for tactical RPGs and it’ll …

NIS America Is Bringing “Danganronpa: Another Episode” To The West This Fall

With every good video game there comes a sequel, with a great video game series like “Danganronpa” there comes not only sequels but spin-off titles, with every in-depth series there comes unanswered questions, and with every unanswered question there eventually comes a suitable answer. Dragon Ball Z: Super Extreme Butoden Announced For The Nintendo 3DS

In my humble opinion; the more contemporary handheld consoles like the PlayStation Vita and the Nintendo 3DS don’t get as much “Dragon Ball Z” love as they should. Yes, it’s true, “Dragon Ball Z” games for the 3DS over in Japan aren’t as “rare” as I made them sound but they don’t necessarily get as much publicity as those that get a release on bigger consoles like the PlayStation 3, 4, the Xbox One and the 360. This is always a huge disappointment for people like me who love handheld gaming and want to see the titles released specifically for the consoles shine. This is why I’m very excited about the upcoming Nintendo 3DS fighting game “Dragon Ball Z: Super Extreme Butoden” which has only just been announced through the latest issue of V-Jump. Boasting a roster of one hundred plus characters, I have a feeling deep in my gut that this will be the game to break the localisation barrier and get a release the world over. Why? Not only does it resemble older “DBZ” …

NJPW New Beginning Was The Beginning of the End

When your first PPV is a sure fire contender for Wrestling Event of the Year, like Wrestle Kingdom 9 was for New Japan Pro Wrestling, it sets a pretty tough precedent to be gauged on. Rather than saving best for last, NJPW unleashed their very best at the dawn of the New Year, creating a pretty tough act to follow up. Of course, the two events that took place on February 11 and 14, collectively and aptly known as New Beginning, marked a pretty important place in Japanese wrestling history. New Beginning was never going to be the same excess grandeur as Wrestle Kingdom 9, but as the name puts it so eloquently, the events that took place on 11th and 14th February respectively marked the beginning of something new, for better or for worse. The first event held on 11th February took place in Osaka, main evented by a battle for the prestigious IWGP Heavyweight Championship. Hiroshi Tanahashi was quite literally on top of the wrestling world, defeating The Rainmaker last month in what …

Gangsta Volume Four – Review

Sex sells! It’s a simple truth of this world. In fact, there’s an entire industry that proves it and it’s featured in, surprisingly enough, almost all facets of pop culture. Specifically; crime stories. Every good gangster-type story has three main staples: Guns, suits and beautiful women. Unfortunately, most of the men who write these types of stories forget that the ladies are just as important as characters than the men. This is why, most of the time, the story will focus only on the male characters and not so much the women. “Gangsta”, though, is very much different. The Manga takes what we’ve been taught about the life of a Mobster and flips it on its head: For once, the men and women are on an even keel. This means both genders can own their own brothel BUT both can be gunned down violently by an enemy family. It seems as though volume four, above the three that came before it, makes the audience well aware of the fact that women in the world of “Gangsta” play just as …

FUNimation Announces English Dub Cast for Death Parade

Not to start things off on too depressing a note, but death is an inevitability…ok, that was in fact super depressing…sorry. That being said, there is an anime series that has taken that saddening facet of life and made a game out of it…which is also pretty saddening and raw. I am not doing a good job at explaining this series…I see that now. Just trust me when I say, this is a tremendous series. Keeping up with the good news, FUNimation has just announced some off the cast who will populate their Broadcast Dub. Cast Decim: Alex Organ Woman: Jamie Marchi Nona: Jad Saxton Quin: Anastasia Munoz Clavis: Z. Charles Bolton Takashi: Eric Vale Machiko: Trina Nishimura Crew ADR Director: Zach Bolton Assistant ADR Director/ADR Engineer: Cris George Script Writer: Bonny Clinkenbeard There is a place after death that’s neither heaven nor hell. A bar that serves you one chance to win. You cannot leave until the game is over, and when it is, your life may be too. From Studio MADHOUSE (Death Note, Black Lagoon) comes a thrilling new series where …

Due to a …

Dead or Alive 5: Last Round – Xbox One Review

Dead or Alive 5: Last Round is the final expansion to 2012’s Dead or Alive 5. While the game is available for last generation systems, the next-gen edition of Dead or Alive 5: Last Round on the PS4/Xbox One on the other hand is a whole different story, if not the real deal. The PS4/Xbox One edition not only features a wealth of new content but also a revamped graphics engine that takes advantage of the new technology. Dead or Alive 5: Last Round marks a less-than-ideal debut of the franchise on modern hardware, a distraction until Team Ninja unleash the inevitable Dead or Alive 6. Obviously for the uninitiated, Dead or Alive 5: Last Round is the best possible place to start and a great fighting release through and through. But even those who were on board since the original iteration landed in 2012 may find the offerings of Last Round appealing enough to fall in love with the game once more. Dead or Alive 5 on last generation systems is still a visually impressive game, …

Grave Of The Fireflies Review

“Why do fireflies have to die so soon?” Some would say it’s not fair. As seen in Studio Ghibli’s seminal anime masterpiece Grave of the Fireflies, life isn’t fair. Based on the autobiographical novel by Akiyuki Nosaka of the same name, Grave of the Fireflies is one of the most realistic portrayals of the tragedy and struggles of living in a war torn country ever captured in film. Grave of the Fireflies is unquestionably one of the best anime films there has been or ever will be. Grave of the Fireflies is set in Japan in the time of World War 2. It follows Seita and Setsuko, a brother and sister trying to survive in these harsh times, the film explores their tragic lives as victims of war and underlines it with a sense of hope that maybe everything can be okay. Where Grave of the Fireflies cuts the deepest is in the fact that in war there is no happy endings for anyone. Seita is portrayed as a doting brother who is desperately trying to cling to any …

“Final Fantasy Type-0 HD” is finally on the verge of being released and the entire “Final Fantasy” fandom could not be happier. Square Enix, the wonderful Japanese publisher and developer behind the game, have continued to provide the world with updates on the game through trailers, screenshots and just general news for months on end. It’s now gotten to the point where Square Enix is so close to releasing the game that they’ve just released their final trailer for the upcoming game. It’s a Japanese trailer accompanied by English subtitles that basically outlines the story of the game as well as some of the updated features like dual audio options and updated graphics for next generation consoles. Check Out These Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 Images

As I’m sure all anime fans know by this point, Naruto is a pretty popular series. In fact, I hear that a few games have been made of it. Coincidentally enough, this article is about such a game, Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 to be specific. Fans of the previous three Storm titles may be interested to know that the fourth instalment promises the return of the very ninja-esque Wall Running feature. Additionally, a newly implemented Fish-Lens effect will ramp up the excitement of battle, because we all know how explosive combat between super powered combatants needs to be cooler…not that I’m complaining. So look forward to some old features and a slew of new ones as the Storm series comes to a ninja-packed end. -30-

Terra Formars Volume Three – Review

Let me lay it down for you: Eventually, so I’ve been lead to believe, this planet will be no more. With the inevitable death of the Earth will come the eradication of every single native species…that includes us humans. This is why we have to start thinking about alternative existence plans. Lucky for us, there are a whole bunch of other planets hanging around in the same solar system as ours that would gladly allow for us to change it’s overall makeup to resemble Earth. This is what we call ‘Terraforming’, though it’s a little more complicated than what I just described. – Excerpt from “Terra Formars” Volume One Review By this point in “Terra Formars”, Earth has tried their hand at colonising Mars a couple of times but, for some mysterious reason, the crews sent to the red planet all come back dead…or, in fact, not at all. Volume three follows the story of Annex I, the fourth group to head to Mars, on their trip across the stars. Unfortunately they’re attacked by those …

My Hero Academia – The Dawn Of A New Era For Shonen Jump

Throughout our childhood we’re told time and time again to enjoy it while we can. As teenagers, as school students, as growing human beings we’re once again told to enjoy every single moment. All the while it’s drilled into our heads that, once we become adults, we’ll only be left with a longing for the type of life we lead as young men and women. That’s possibly why nostalgia is such a power feeling. For many of you reading this article and definitely for us writing this article, the early days of our adolescence were spent enthralled by things like Anime or Manga. A possible memory burned into the minds of those people is that of waiting for a new issue of Weekly Shonen jump or the latest volume of your favorite Manga to be released. Back then it seemed as though all that mattered was what happened to Naruto next or how Ichigo Kurosaki (“Bleach”) was going to defeat the next Hollow. It turns out that what our parents said was entirely true; that, as adults, …

Guy ‘Catches ‘Em All’ On Pokemon Blue Faster Than Anyone Ever, Gets World Record, Kinda Cheated Though

2 hours and 20 minutes is all it took for speedrunner Shenanigans Smash to catch em all on Pokemon Blue. That’s right all 151 Pokemon captured in just under 2 and a half hours. Its a world record folks. Now just before you think he is the best trainer ever, I must inform you that he did kind of cheat by taking advantage of glitches in the game but I mean how else would you get Mew? Use strength on a truck near the SS Anne? Don’t be ridiculous! Regardless of all that you can check out Shenanigans Smash smash the record for quickest completion in the video below. I still think SnapThirty’s nuzlocke challenge should get a world record for quickest failure of nuzlocke challenge ever but as always the good guys get screwed. -30-

Snap Play: “Advance Wars” Episode 04

Fans …

LBX: Little Battlers Experience Volume 1 Review

It’s zoids but not really. It’s crush gear without the wheels. It’s Little Battlers Experience, the latest craze to sweep the children of Japan by storm. Stop me if this sounds familiar to you. Because boy oh boy is this a familiar ride. If you’ve ever read a kids shonen manga or watched a shonen anime, you’ve likely seen something like this before. But you know what? That’s alright because Little Battlers Experience or LBX for short is actually pretty fun. Like many kids shonen manga before it, Little Battlers Experience revolves around a world that revolves around a children’s game and the toys involved in it. Even the evil criminal organizations are obsessed with LBX and love to LBX battle in order to solve all disputes. But in the world of kids shonen, that is just par for the course and LBX is no exception to the rule. LBX follows Van Yamano a young boy whose father who went missing after a mysterious LBX incident on a plane to an LBX event. Van seeks …

World Trigger Volume Three – Review

The world is in constant danger of a “Neighbour” attack. The last time the “Neighbours” got a full chance to wreak havoc in the realm of the humans, many people perished. That’s why a little government-run organisation called “Border” was established: To develop an army of capable soldiers, each trained to take on and despatch the other-worldly forces before they get a chance to, once again, claim the lives of the innocent. There’s a problem, though. I huge one. One that will soon come to prove detrimental to the well-being of our dimension, and one that happens to be the the fault of those who’re supposed to be defending us. What first entered my life as a terrible Anime series has quickly become one of my favorite contemporary Manga titles and without the support of Madman Entertainment who has provided us with review copies I would have never gotten the chance to experience “World Trigger”, so to them I say “thank you”, and to you out there I say “let’s get on with this review”! …

Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign Volume 3 Review

Vampires, Demons, Cursed Gear, Horsemen. With these powerhouses of fiction failing miserably at any form of co-existence, one would not be remiss to expect a series of conflicts to permeate the world. Why, one might even say the situation is down right apocalyptic. Who are we kidding? It is most assuredly that. The world, as we the reading audience know it, is over and chaos reigns. But, as we the reading audience also know it, villainy does not often prosper in a world where the good guys can tentatively tame demons. Sure it might not be the cleanest solution, but when has that ever been the most fun? Grab your stylish threads and inconceivably powerful weapon on the way through because you’ve just been promoted to Moon Demon Company. Well Yu and friends have at least. Now fully fledged soldiers and gearing to kick some serious blood-sucker hide, the recently established Shinoa Squad is responsibly amped about their first mission. However, as we are so thoughtfully told, Moon Demon Company works in groups of five, …

Hands-On with Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires

For the past 18 or so years (allowing for development cycles), Dynasty Warriors has allowed those of the present to step into the shoes of those from the past. Not just anybody from the past mind you, I’m talking about historical figures, combatants in an ongoing struggle for power, soldiers of competing kingdoms. One might even go as far as to call them Dynasty Warriors. As the addition of a subtitle would indicate, as well as it existing as a physically separate entity, Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires features a variation of gameplay from the initial title. However fear not Warriors fans, for the game still retains its chaotic battle style that pits you against armies of thousands in what can only be described as a fair fight (and in flagrant defiance of all human capabilities, both historic and otherwise). It is during these moments that the character you have deigned to control can truly showcase their fighting instincts, mastery of weaponry and the overall charisma that causes so many to stand behind them in a time …

Hands-On with Dead or Alive 5: Last Round

For those of you who are going through cold lonely nights like our Frank Inglese (especially on Valentine’s Day), then fret not, come February 20 the fine gals of Dead or Alive 5: Last Round will be taking care of you (and most certainly not judge you). We recently had a chance to sit down with the final build of the title, and based on what we’ve played, fighting fans should be looking forward to the first next-gen debut of the celebrated 3D fighting franchise later this month. Now granted, this is a remaster of a game that came out some years ago on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and Last Round is in fact the third (and apparently final) expansion to Dead or Alive 5. Now until a true Dead or Alive 6 happens, this is what we’ve got for our DOA fix, but honestly Dead or Alive 5: Last Round is looking to be less of a consolation prize and more of a definitive fighting release for your Xbox One or PS4. Something …

Assassination Classroom Volume One – Review

Yeah, I’ll admit it; I sometimes miss my high school days. I do, I do. I hate saying so though, especially because my Mother would always lecture me on the importance of enjoying my experience there while I could. It’s funny, she never spoke to me about anything regarding academic excellence. She always pushed me further into the things that I loved but never forced me to do anything I didn’t have even a shred of enjoyment doing. Maybe that’s why I decided early on that I was going to be a comedian, or that I was going to be a writer, or that I was going to be a graphic novelist. I was never given the spiel about being a doctor or a lawyer because, to her, what is important isn’t money or status but happiness. Amazingly, there were only a few teachers in my time that ever preached the same way of thinking; that doing something you love is ultimately more rewarding than being at the top of your class or on the very last …

Hachiko Reunites With Owner At Shibuya Station After Nearly a Century Apart

In one of the most heartwarming stories in recent memory, a memorial statue has been erected in Shibuya station depicting the dog who waited, Hachiko finally reuniting with his owner and best friend Prof. Ueno. For quite some time a statue has stood at Shibuya station depicting Hachiko awaiting his owners return, unfortunately one that was never to come due to his owner’s untimely passing. Now at long last the two are reunited in what is sure to rouse a few tears from those touched by this heartwarming tale of a dog’s undying loyalty and love. It may have taken nearly a century, but your wait is over Hachiko. Thank you for teaching us the meaning of loyalty and to never forget the ones you love. Rest easy pup. -30-

Persona 5 – It’s Time You Meet Arsene: The Gentleman Thief

Now, reader, I’m sure you’re very much aware of what “Persona 5” is. In fact, if I was a betting man I’d put my money on the fact that you’re very much invested in the whole “Persona” series of video games not just the latest addition. You’ve seen the new trailer, you’ve seen the new characters, you’ve seen the new mascot character but what we all wanted to see the most was what kind of Personas would call “P5” their home. Now, thanks to Japan’s Dengeki PlayStation Magazine, we’ve just been introduced to what I’d call the “Main” Persona of the new game and, running with the thief motif, it just so happens to be named after one of the greatest fictional larcenist of all time: A gentleman thief called Arsene Lupin. OK, before you jump to any conclusions, the new Persona is NOT named after the titular character from the long-running Anime and Manga series “Lupin The Third” because, well, Lupin was named after the same character as the Izanagi-like Arsene so, if anything, they’re …

Like Father, Like Son – Tekken 7’s Opening Cinematic Revealed

It is the video game series’ like “Tekken” that don’t really need a lot of this post-release promotion simply because, over the years, it has proven to countless fans the world over that when it comes to fighting games the team behind the much loved arcade fighter know exactly what it is they’re doing. If Bandai Namco Games really wanted to, they could scrap publicity for the game entirely and still be assured that all if not most of the existing fans of the series WILL purchase the new release. Them alongside a whole bunch of new fans that will always jump onboard at the site of a new game. That’s why it’s all the more sweeter when the world is delivered something like this; the opening cinematic for the upcoming game. While it doesn’t actually give us anymore information on the innards of the game itself, it does do well to raise hype and pump us up for one hell of a good game. The “Tekken 7” opening movie also happens to feature a …

Toshio Suzuki Reveals That Studio Ghibli Is Indeed Open Once Again

All Anime fans, great or small, should be aware of the closure of one of the industry’s most loved studios lead by two industry legends Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki. When revealed mid-way through last year that the famed Studio Ghibli was closing down and cleaning house, fans across the world bowed their heads in both reverence and sadness. The studio that brought many people so much joy for so many years looked as though it was gone forever BUT, despite the closure being officially confirmed by the heads of the Studio, the Anime-loving community were assured time and time again that this “hiatus” will not mean the end of Ghibli forever. If anything, it simplifies a new beginning. Well the destined time has finally arrived and the studio has no re-opened says Toshio Suzuki who appeared on a talk show over the weekend and had this to say: “…We’re worrying about what we should make next… When you think about the current state of the world, it’s hard to know what to make. It …

‘ONE OK ROCK’ Rip It Up With New Single ‘Cry Out’, Upcoming Album Expected To Rock Hard

ONE OK ROCK rock hard. That is the manifesto that the hottest J-Rock act in the world right now lives by, rock hard and rip it up along the way. With their latest single ‘Cry Out’ we get a taste of their upcoming album, which if this single is anything to go by, will blow our freaking minds. The music video for ‘Cry Out’ was released this past week and may very well be one of their best yet. The band is slated to release their next album on February 13th which is a few weeks ahead of their upcoming Australian tour as part of the Soundwave Festival. It is a good time to be a ONE OK ROCK fan. Rock hard, rip it up and cry out, baby! -30-

Kodansha Launching New Manga Magazine About Rage

Kodansha have just made a major announced a brand new magazine will be joining their line-up. The new magazine is to be titled Shonen Magazine R and will apparently feature stories focused on the theme of ‘Rage’, hence the R in the magazine title. So given the theme of ‘Rage’ being the central focus on the magazine are we to expect a full magazine of Eren Jaegar yelling at things? Only time will tell. The magazine is scheduled to be released on the 20th of every even numbered month (how’s that for a complicated release schedule?) with the first issue due to be released on the 13th of February. Okay then. So who’s ready for a wholesome helping of rage? -30-

Asian Kung-Fu Generation Are Back, Baby!

The legendary Japanese rock band Asian Kung-Fu Generation are ready to rip it up once again with their first single in 2 years set for release on March 18th. The new single is titled ‘Easter’ and you would never guess where they recorded it. Recording for their upcoming album including the track ‘Easter’ has taken place at the Foo Fighters private recording studio ‘Studio 606′ in Los Angeles. That is some hallowed ground for rock n’ roll and now with the echoes of Asian Kung-Fu Generation’s roaring guitars and pounding drums forever engrained in its halls, Studio 606 now has a place in J-Rock history. I for one am looking forward to what lies ahead for Asian Kung-Fu Generation with this next album and we will be sure to get a taste test with the single ‘Easter’. Stay tuned for more information on the upcoming album ahead of its launch. -30-

Hands-On With “Dragon Ball: Xenoverse”

The “Dragon Ball” series of video games, in my opinion, has not been a very awe-inspiring one. Throughout the years, fans of the series were time and time again delivered new “Dragon Ball” games that, while not too terrible, were also never the best around. The last “Dragon Ball” video game I played was something like six years ago and what I was left with were nothing but feelings of disappointment. Being such a huge fan of both the Anime and manga series of the same name, not being able to enjoy what I believed would be fantastic video game experiences has, over the years, slowly diminished my love for “Dragon Ball” fighting games…that is, until Bandai Namco Games invitied us to their Sydney HQ to try out the demo build of their upcoming “Dragon Ball” title “Xenoverse”. The hours of I spent playing through the game changed my views on not only the future of “Dragon Ball” gaming but on the entire history of the series which, as you should know, is one hell …

“Terra Formars” Live-Action Film To Be Directed By Takashi Miike

There’s always a huge worry when it comes to live-action film adaptations of your favorite Anime or Manga and it usually lies in who it is that’s decided to spearhead development. An unfit director could mean the death of a film and it strikes at the hearts of all the series’ fans. It looks as though “Terra Formars” will not be causing too much distress with its live-action adaptation (which has just been green-lit) because the man behind it all will be none other than Takashi Miike. Yes, Takashi Miike, possibly one of the best directors, period, but also one of the most suited to adapt a story like “Terra Formars”. He is, without a doubt, my favorite Japanese director and with films like “Crows Zero”, “Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney”, “Tokyo Tribe, and “Ichi The Killer” under his belt, I can imagine most of you reading this love his work too. As far as detailed information goes; there really isn’t any. The announcement in Shueisha’s Young Jump magazine stated only that the film has been green-lit …

Three Idiots Play: The Attack On Titan Tribute Game

What happens when you put three idiots into a situation they THINK they can do well in but, realistically speaking, they have absolutely no chance at survival? You get this video. Luke, Frank and Kane decide it’s time to take on the destructive force of an army of Titans in the “Attack On Titan” tribute game which, while unofficial and full of bugs, is still one hell of an entertaining web game. Watch as these three buffoons live, die and repeat…well, maybe just die and repeat. There’s not a lot of “living” that goes on in this video. What starts off as a simple competition to see who the greatest Titan killer is quickly turns into a fight for the sake of humanity as the boys ditch the silly contention once they realise the world is in a whole bunch of danger. Watch as we glitch through Titan faces and even sometimes the game itself while we do our best to survive the harsh wasteland that is “Attack On Titan”. If you want to play …

The New Persona 5 Trailer Will Have You Seeing Red

There’s no better news than that of “Persona 5” news and at the very top of my “favorite things to see” list has always been a brand-new trailer. Well ATLUS delivered with the unveiling of the very first full “Persona 5” trailer which showed off a great deal more than I believe a lot of people expected. With a tonne of colour, trailer gave us a glimpse at both the combat and social simulator side of the game, both of which look fantastic! Audiences are somewhat introduced to four members of the main cast but I can’t help imagining that there are going to be a fee more we wont be made privy to until closer to the release. To say the very least; there’s a lot about this trailer that screams “Persona” but there’s also a great deal that boasts the evolution of the great series. With a sinister-looking protagonist, a Bancho best friend, a Rise Kujikawa impersonator and a cat mascot, there’s not much else to be desires which can only mean this …

Akiba’s Trip: Undead And Undressed – PlayStation 4 Review

Just incase you havn’t had enough fun running through the streets of Tokyo’s Akihabara, striping random civilians and getting chased by the cops, NIS America have decided that it’s time for the game you played on both the PlayStation Vita and the PlayStation 3 to be released on the console with greater capabilities; the PlayStation 4. It was only last year that the West got its chance to taste the incredibly Japanese style of “Akiba’s Strip: Undead and Undressed” and even though it met with pretty average scores the world over, it has still somehow remained such a lovable and well-enjoyed game. At least, people like it enough for the developers over at Acquire to organise for the game to receive an updated port for a “next gen” console. In fact, there’s already word that the same game will, once again, be ported onto another console! This time the Nintendo 3DS. What gameplay mechanics will be added to that version I have no idea, but I’m not here to talk about the game that hasn’t …

Latest Dragon Ball Xenoverse Trailers Shows How Raditz Could Have Survived The Special Beam Cannon

We all remember the first time Goku died in “Dragon Ball Z”, right? It happened almost as soon as he met his Saiyan brother and it was dealt to him by former enemy Piccolo. Goku locked his brother into a sturdy grapple and the green man fired a spiralling laser through both of the monkey men’s chests. Yeah, yeah, everyone remembers this. Do you remember every thinking to yourself; “Surely Raditz could have gotten out of that”? Because I do, and it has plagued me for years. From what I can remember, there was a lot of his body that Goku hadn’t locked up which surely could have been utilised to, you know…escape death. Well Bandai Namco Games Japan have released a brand-new trailer for their upcoming fighting title “Dragon Ball Xenoverse” that shows just how Raditz could have survived the dynamic duo’s team up and, well…it looks like he did it with ease. The video is meant to be showing off how “Dragon Ball” history is being altered in the story of the new …

Persona The Movie: #3 Falling Down Full Trailer Released

With the third Persona 3 movies April 4th release drawing ever closer, it’s no surprise that a new trailer would be revealed…so don’t be surprised, because a new trailer has been revealed. Featuring the movies main theme “Light in Starless SKy”, the trailer showcases some of the drama and emotion that will permeate the film. Igor: Do you remember? On the card you verified, it is written: “I will take responsibility for all of my actions and choices, no matter what may come from them.” Fallos: It was fun up until now. See ya. Ken: It’s over, Aragaki… This was for the best… Right? Chidori: Junpei will come back tomorrow. Junpei: Just give her a little more time! Ryoji: You have kind eyes. But you know, that kindness will isolate you. Aegis: Because… I had a bad feeling… Mitsuru: Father! Takeharu: Mitsuru…! Mitsuru: Father!!! Makoto: Persona. Akihiko: What is it we’re supposed to fight for from here on out? Mitsuru: But you saw, didn’t you!? It was a farce!! Takaya: It’s been a while. Makoto: …

Majora’s Mask 3D Receives New 30 Second Trailer

With the announcement that one of the darkest Zelda entries was receiving a 3DS port, many a fan rejoiced. Then maybe cowered a little once they remembered what the moon looked like…terrifying. Well either way, Nintendo has released a new 30 second trailer that showcases a little of that old school charm and explains the basic plot of the game with the help of a handy dandy announcer. So journey to the land of Termina once more, where after 14 years, still only 3 days remain to save the world… -30-

Monty Oum Passes Away

A few days ago, it was made known that Monty Oum, the creator of RWBY and an animator at Rooster Teeth, had been hospitalised due to an as of then undisclosed reason. Unfortunately, a message posted by Rooster Teeth CEO Matt Hullum has revealed that Monty passed away on Sunday afternoon. He notes that Monty was in good hands at the hospital and was not in pain, which hopefully provides some solace during this sad time. A fundraiser was established when knowledge of Monty’s hospitalisation was made known, and I’m sure any donations would be greatly appreciated by his family and friends. Monty will be sorely missed and I only hope that more people continue to discover the sheer epicness that is his animation and fight choreography. I haven’t seen anyone arrange a fight in quite such a fashion, and I’m sad that no new moments will grace our screens. Our friend, inspiration and co-worker Monty Oum passed away yesterday afternoon at 4:34 PM surrounded by people who loved him very much. Ten days ago Monty …

Shoko Nakagawa’s Life With 10 Cats Gets Anime Adaptation, Anime Industry Hits Rock Bottom

Shoko Nakagawa loves her cats. She loves those furballs so damn much. She is 29 years old, single and the ‘mother’ of 10 cats. Yes that is right she lives with her 10 cats, also she is a Japanese pop idol just in case you didn’t know. Normally a pop idols family of cats wouldn’t be newsworthy unless your into that kind of thing in which case this whole scenario would probably be pretty hot. However Shoko’s family of cats are making news today because the story of her life with these 10 felines is officially getting an anime adaptation. Now I don’t blame any reader who feels like this is a bottom of the barrel idea for an anime series because that really is exactly what it is, but in an era where a season of anime having at least 2 halfway okay series is the norm what do you expect? The series is to be directed by Mitsuo Hashimoto, the man behind Battle B-Daman and Bakugan Battle Brawlers, for some reason. The anime …

So They’re Actually Sending A Replica “Spear Of Longinus” To The Moon

I’m not going to beat around the bush here, reader: This is ridiculous. You know what “Neon Genesis Evangelion” is right? Surely! It’s a psychologically jarring story about gargantuan non-robots fighting even more gargantuan non-aliens that you either love or hate. Usually you’ll find that “Neon Genesis Evangelion” fans aren’t in the middle about what they think of the series. The series has a huge and very much obvious audience divide with some fighting tooth and nail that it is the greatest series of all time and others doing a same but making the opposite point. Regardless of what side you’re on…this news is insane. In fact, this news is so insane I almost didn’t bother writing about it due to doubts of it’s legitimacy but seeing as many other publications have now begun promoting the crowdfunding campaign I can’t help but believe this is entirely real. Allow me to fill you in: We, Earth, are sending a replica “Spear Of Longinus” from the long-running sci-fi series to the Moon. Yes. There is a huge team …
